For too many kids from low-income families, summer isn’t a time of vacations and backyard barbecues — it’s a time of hunger.

Summer meals programs exist, but they operate under a set of outdated regulations that stop them from working very effectively. As a result, they only reach a fraction of the kids who need food, and for every kid who eats regularly at a summer meals site, there are five more who miss out.

That adds up to millions of children.

Hungry kids need your help this summer

Summer can be the hungriest time of year for kids in need.  When schools close, school meals disappear, and for many of these kids, summers are a time of hunger and anxiety.

We already have a national summer meals program designed to feed hungry children, but it doesn't work effectively in most of our communities. We need to improve this program to ensure more meals are reaching the kids who need them.

I am deeply concerned about children and families in our state, and I know you are too. I hope you'll stand up for them and improve the summer meals program.

In 2015, Congress has the chance to help millions of hungry kids get the nutrition they need. As you work on Child Nutrition Reauthorization this year, I urge you to support efforts to improve the summer meals program. Specifically, states and communities need more options to implement programs that reach kids in more effective and efficient ways.

The bottom line: We need policies that provide communities with the ability to overcome barriers and connect more kids to summer meals, no matter where they live.
