Strengthen SNAP in the next coronavirus relief package

* Temporarily increase the maximum SNAP benefit amount by at least 15%, which is about $25 per person per month;
* Temporarily increase the minimum SNAP benefit from $16 to $30;
* Offer additional SNAP flexibility to reflect the reality of our current situation, including the expansion of the Restaurant Meals Program.

SNAP supplements a family's food budget and is a safe and effective way to feed children. Strengthening the program so families receive a temporary benefit increase of about $25 per person each month is a lifeline for those who are facing extreme hardship - unemployment, rising food prices, eviction and hunger - because of this pandemic.

In addition to feeding families, SNAP also fuels local economies. The USDA's own research has shown that SNAP is proven to have a stimulus effect on the economy. Money spent at local grocery stores and markets lead to more jobs, wages and local economic activity in the community. SNAP benefits currently average about $1.50 per person per meal and often run out before the end of the month. During this time of great hardship, families are missing meals to make ends meet and parents are waiting in long lines at food banks so their children will not go to bed hungry. Congress must take action.
