Summer meals programs exist, but they operate under a set of outdated regulations that stop them from working very effectively. As a result, they only reach a fraction of the kids who need food, and for every kid who eats regularly at a summer meals site, there are five more who miss out.

That adds up to millions of children.

As a member of Congress, you have the chance to end summer hunger for millions of children in America, but the time to act is now. I urge you to take action on a strong Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill that will improve our national summer meals programs. 
 
This is fundamental to ending childhood hunger in our state and across America. 
 
Summer is the hungriest time of year for children from low-income families. When schools close, the meals many kids rely on end as well and summer becomes a time of hunger and anxiety. When the current summer meals program works well, it's a lifeline. Today, however, the program just doesn't reach a majority of kids in need.
 
It doesn't have to be this way.
 
I hope you will support smart, effective policies that would give states more options to reach hungry kids, especially in hard-to-reach regions, like rural areas or communities currently ineligible to host summer sites. Proven options like meal delivery or a monthly grocery credit would allow states to reach more children effectively and efficiently with the food they need during the summer months. 
 
With these improvements, as many as 6.5 million children who are underserved by the current program would have the opportunity to get the food they need during the summer months. This isn't just the right thing to do; it's also the smart thing to do for our nation.  Studies show that ending summer hunger on this scale could have a massive impact on avoidable health care costs, summer learning loss, graduation rates and future economic security.
 
I am deeply concerned about children and families in our state, and I know you are too. Time is running out. Hungry kids can't wait.
