Bake Sale Heroes

Kids Helping Kids - Tyler Zager

TylerFLbakesale-website.jpgTyler first hosted a Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry this past spring after seeing an ad on Food Network. Since then, he has hosted 8 bake sales, some months hosting one bake sale every other weekend. At 11 years old, Tyler raised enough in just a few months to provide over 30,000 meals to children in need, hosted the most amount of bake sales amongst our volunteers, and won the Kids BBQ Championship on Food Network.

This past year has only been the beginning for Tyler. Over the next year he hopes to start a No Kid Hungry club in his school to raise awareness in his community, as well as partnering with local bakeries to host a large bake sale event for No Kid Hungry later this year.

#BakeLikeABoss - Erin Elliott

I knew right away that this would be the perfect way to combine my love of baking with my passion for ending childhood hunger. I decided that hosting my bake sale at my office would be a good kick-off point to start what I hoped would become many bake sales.

20161213-NKH-Buxton-website.jpg I proposed the idea to my boss, asking only that they let me send an email, set out baked goods in the break room, and put a donation jar out, and that I would take care of everything else. They agreed and so my bake sale was born.

By the time the bake sale day had come, I had already baked over 30 loaves of bread. I loaded up my car with other goodies - mini bundts, cookies, granola bars, fresh biscuits, and more, and headed to the office to lay them out. People were shocked and excited about all of the goodies! The company offers to match all donations, and by the end of the day, with the matching contribution, we raised over $1500!!! Posting about my bake sale through social media also led to other organizations I am involved in asking if their location could host one, too, so I'm already looking forward to the next one! ~Erin Elliott (first time baker in 2016, raised $3,865 through 3 bake sales.)

I started my first bake sale nine years ago when I saw a commercial on the Food Network about volunteers hosting bake sales in their communities to help end childhood hunger. I looked into it a little more because I've always loved to bake. After visiting the Share Our Strength website and getting more information I recruited my good friend Carmen to see if she would like to help me put together a bake sale.

We planned our first bake sale in less than a month and recruited our friends and family members to bake for us (in addition to doing our own baking) and held the inaugural Inland Empire Cookie Monsters Great American Bake Sale. The event has grown over the years with increasing support from our friends, family and co-workers and each year we try to outdo the previous year. We love the community involvement of our local businesses in Redlands, CA for donating prizes to our ever popular prize wheel as well as knowing that the end result of our hard work is helping end childhood hunger in our country. The amazing time, talent and generosity of our volunteer bakers astounds me every year to know that everyone is working together to present a fun community event while benefiting children in need.
