TELL CONGRESS: Families Deserve Relief. Reverse SNAP Cuts Now.

It's been one year since Congress made the largest cuts to SNAP in the program’s history. So far, more than 4 million people have lost access to the program, including more than 800,000 children in just 13 states, and new national research commissioned by No Kid Hungry finds parents living on low incomes are having to make difficult decisions about which basic needs to prioritize and which expenses must be delayed or sacrificed.

Congress has the power to give families the relief they deserve by delaying or reversing the SNAP cuts in the Farm Bill, a piece of legislation that impacts food and farming programs roughly every five years. Without explicit action in the Farm Bill, which lawmakers are debating right now, these devastating cuts to SNAP could be locked in until 2031, or longer.

SNAP is how more than 40 million Americans, including nearly 16 million kids, keep food on the table when they fall on hard times. This is a moment of choice. The House recently passed a Farm Bill that failed to repeal those cuts, but the Senate still has the chance to do the right thing. Please urge your Senators to use this opportunity to restore SNAP for kids, families, and communities across the country.

Families are Hurting: Restore SNAP in the Farm Bill

A year ago, Congress passed nearly $200 billion in cuts to SNAP through an expedited process outside of traditional Farm Bill negotiations. This was the largest cut to SNAP in the program's history and was passed without fully debating the consequences on the more than 40 million Americans, including nearly 16 million kids, who use SNAP to help afford groceries.

Since then, more than 4 million people have lost access to the program, including more than 800,000 kids in just 13 states, and this number is only expected to rise if the most harmful provisions are allowed to take full effect next year.

What that looks like on the ground is families already stretching budgets past the breaking point, making impossible tradeoffs between food, rent, utilities and other basic needs just to get through the month.

A recent survey underscores how essential SNAP remains: the overwhelming majority of program recipients say they would have to cut back significantly on food without SNAP and credit the program with helping their family reach a better, more stable financial situation.

The Farm Bill has always been the primary way to shape SNAP policy, but the current Farm Bill proposal, as written, fails to:

- Reverse or meaningfully address the harmful SNAP cuts enacted last year
- Recognize that families are being forced to skip meals, delay utility bills and take on extra work just to survive the compounding affordability crisis
- Provide states with adequate time to successfully implement program changes before being penalized with additional cost burdens
- Invest in strong SNAP EBT card security to prevent SNAP skimming
- Invest in state agency operations that strengthen integrity and improve program administration

The 2026 Farm Bill is the clearest opportunity you have to mitigate harm and restore stability to a program that is essential for children, families, retailers and local economies.

A Farm Bill that does not undo the cuts to SNAP will cement them for five years or longer and will deepen food insecurity across the country.

It's not too late to do the right thing. I urge you to repeal the SNAP cuts, or, at the very least, provide a two-year delay of their implementation, and to oppose a Farm Bill that doesn't protect SNAP recipients or ensure states can continue to administer the program effectively and sustainably.
