Make sure kids in New York get the breakfast they need

School breakfast is one of the most effective tools we have in the fight against childhood hunger, especially in New York City, where one in five children faces hunger. Although the city has made great progress in recent years in connecting more students with school breakfast through the successful Breakfast in the Classroom program, today that progress is in jeopardy.

Mayor de Blasio's FY 2020 Executive Budget contains proposed cuts to funding and weakened program requirements for Breakfast in the Classroom. This will make it harder for schools to ensure students are getting the fuel their growing brains and bodies need to succeed.

We hope you will join us in urging Mayor de Blasio and the New York City Council to both restore this funding and continue to successfully implement breakfast in the classroom in New York City schools.

Breakfast in the Classroom Helps NYC Kids

Dear [Decision Maker],

Under your leadership, New York City has been a national leader in connecting students to school breakfast through Breakfast in the Classroom. Since school year 2014-2015 (the year before the original Breakfast in the Classroom policy was announced), an additional 79,771 students from across the five boroughs are eating school breakfast. These proposed cuts put that progress in jeopardy. We must not let this happen.

Breakfast in the Classroom is an essential tool in building greater equity among students, as serving it as a part of the school day is the most inclusive way to ensure that all students are starting the day ready to learn, regardless of family income. When all students get breakfast, it helps to level the playing field, making sure everyone starts the day with the nutrition they need to focus and learn.

A reduction to Breakfast in the Classroom will make it harder for students to get the nutrition they need to thrive. Please stand up for children by restoring your commitment to Breakfast in the Classroom in the Fiscal Year 2020 New York City budget.

Sincerely,
