Childhood hunger affects millions of kids in our country, but it's a solvable problem. Working together, we can close the gap between kids who have enough to eat and those who don't, regardless of where they live, how old they are, how much money their family makes or what time of year it is.

Child Nutrition Reauthorization is one of the best opportunities we currently have to feed more kids in the summertime. This is important because summer can be the hungriest time of year for kids across the county.

Another summer is here, and thousands of children in our state are facing weeks of hunger. As a Member of Congress, you have the chance to end this summer hunger, but the time to act is now. With every month that goes by without a bill that strengthens, protects and improves child nutrition programs, kids across the country face another summer of hunger.

In the coming months the Senate Agriculture Committee will introduce a Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill. As a constituent, I am urging you to support and prioritize a bipartisan Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill that ends summer hunger for kids in our country and includes these three practical policy solutions:
 
1. Provide flexibility in the summer meals "congregate feeding" requirement, which currently mandates that kids consume meals onsite even though they face many barriers to doing so.

2. Permanently authorize the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer EBT), which provides a monthly grocery benefit to families during the summer months.

3. Streamline existing meal programs (afterschool meals and summer meals) to reduce red tape and bureaucracy and to ultimately reach more kids with the food they need. 
 
This is fundamental to ending childhood hunger in our state and across America.
 
These improvements to the summer meals program in a CNR bill go a long way to ensuring that kids in our state get the nutrition they need, regardless of their zip code, the time of year or how much money their family makes. When kids get the nutrition they need, they grow up healthy, educated and better able to compete in today's economy.
